Welp, this answers the question of whether or not I need a tow hitch for my upcoming winter vehicle purchase that will (in a pinch) serve as a snow recovery vehicle for my friends and family.
It would appear tow hooks and a good tow strap are the way to go! Barring spending actual money on a winch setup, of course.

Get something like one of these for hooking up tow straps to a receiver.

The other option is to put the snatch strap through the pin in the hitch, useful if you don't have a recovery receiver handy. I've heard both positive and negative things about this though.
